Afgelopen Koningsdag hebben we een nieuw experiment gedaan met de Wijkbot, de prototype-kit van een stadsrobot waarmee we in de Afrikaanderwijk aan de slag zijn. Na afloop van het bezoek van de koning organiseerde de wijk een festival in het park. Met de wijkbot was een zogenaamde Verzamelbot gemaakt die hielp het festivalterrein schoon te houden. Het ontwerp en maken van deze Verzamelbot was gedaan door de bewoners van de denktank Cities of Things Lab 010.
Lees meer over het project uitgebreider elders op de website, maar in het kort is het doel om te kijken of het mogelijk is om een nieuwe technologie die normaal vanuit de grote techpartijen zou worden ontwikkeld en verspreid, in plaats daarvan te laten ontwerpen door burgers, en deze ook maximale mogelijkheden te bieden de functie ervan te bepalen. Dat is de Wijkbot, een robot-bouwpakket gemaakt van eenvoudige materialen. Deze versie is daarbij nog helemaal laagdrempelig door het gebruik van een tweedehands Hoverboard als basis, gecombineerd met een standaard open-source controller.
Uiteindelijk is de robot die is gemaakt niet het belangrijkste onderdeel, we willen vooral onderzoeken of we het samen met de bewoners kunnen ontwikkelen. In het project is daarvoor een denktank samengesteld met bewoners uit de buurt. Ook partner in het project is “Studio voor de Stad”, een initiatief van een aantal ontwerpbureaus die graag de ontwerp diensten willen inzetten voor de burgers zelf, in plaats van voor de organisaties die het normaal doel.
Na een aantal sessies om de rol van de robots in de wijk te bespreken en na te denken welke functies ze zouden kunnen krijgen eventueel, bleek dat Koningsdag dit jaar in Rotterdam wordt gevierd en de koning zijn tocht door de stad begint in de Afrikaanderwijk. De groep besluit deze gelegenheid aan te pakken om een robot te schetsen en die op die dat in de buurt uit te testen.
In de tweetal brainstorms is het idee van de Verzamelbot geboren, en in een volgende sessie wordt deze ook daadwerkelijk ingevuld met een maak workshop bij Scrap. De basis is een IBC container die wordt gebruikt in het nieuwe ontwerp van het grondstoffenstation van de markt. De verzamelbot krijgt al snel de functie om herbruikbaar afval te verzamelen. Daarbij is er ook nog een idee dat de verzamelbot ook verhalen uit de wijk zou kunnen verzamelen en deze verspreiden.
Het doel om deze verzamelbot tijdens Koningsdag kennis te laten maken met de buurt. De koning zelfs is er maar kort, maar erna is een openluchtfeest in het park. De groep besluit de Verzamelbot daar te testen.
Het is uiteindelijk goed gelukt. Een groot deel van de groep kon er bij zijn en -belangrijk- de bewoners bij het feest begrepen de functie en maakten er ook soms gebruik van. Er zijn ook zeker dingen die beter kunnen, daarvoor is het een experiment.
De week ervoor was er bij het Smart & Social Fest ook een presentatie en discussie over het project en een wijkwandeling waarbij de deelnemende makers en ontwerpers hun ideeen gaven over de rol van de robot.
De volgende stap moeten we nog bepalen, maar het uiteindelijk ideaal is dat een dergelijke kit gebruikt kan worden door de bewoners om eigen diensten te ontwikkelen en exploiteren. Het eind van het project lijkt een goed te gebruiken kit te worden met de duidelijke beschrijving en handleiding voor het proces. We zullen deze introduceren in de wijk met een kleine conferentie met werksessies hopelijk in de zomer.

Last King’s Day, we carried out a new experiment with the Wijkbot, the prototype kit of an urban robot we are working with in the Afrikaanderwijk neighbourhood. After the king’s visit, the neighbourhood organised a festival in the park. The neighbourhood bot was used to create a so-called Verzamelbot (Collectorbot) that helped keep the festival grounds clean. The design and making of this Verzamelbot had been done by residents of the think tank Cities of Things Lab 010.
Read more about the project more extensively elsewhere on the website, but in brief, the aim is to see if it is possible to have a new technology that would normally be developed and disseminated from the big tech parties designed by citizens instead and also give them maximum opportunity to determine its function. That is the Wijkbot, a robot-building kit made from simple materials. In doing so, this version is still entirely low-threshold by using a second-hand Hoverboard as a base, combined with a standard open-source controller.
Ultimately, the robot that has been created is not the most important part, we mainly want to investigate whether we can develop it together with the residents. The project has put together a think tank for this purpose with residents from the neighbourhood. Also, a partner in the project is “Studio voor de Stad”, an initiative of several design firms keen to use design services for the citizens themselves rather than for the organisations that normally target it.
After a number of sessions to discuss the role of the robots in the neighbourhood and think about what functions they could possibly be given, it emerged that King’s Day will be celebrated in Rotterdam this year and the king will start his tour of the city in the Afrikaanderwijk. The group decided to take this opportunity to sketch a robot and test it out in the neighbourhood on that.
In the two brainstorms, the idea of the Verzamelbot is born, and in a subsequent session it is actually fleshed out with a making workshop at Scrap. The basis is an IBC container used in the new design of the market’s Grondstoffenstation (circular resource station). The collection bot is soon given the function of collecting reusable waste. In doing so, there is also an idea that the collection bot could also collect stories from the neighbourhood and distribute them.
The aim is to introduce this Verzamelbot to the neighbourhood during King’s Day. The king is only there briefly, but after, it is an open-air party in the park. The group decides to test the Collectorbot there.
It ended up working well. A large part of the group could attend and -importantly- the residents at the party understood the function and used it at times. There are also definitely things that could be improved, for that it is an experiment.
The week before at the Smart & Social Fest, there was also a presentation and discussion about the project and a neighbourhood walk where participating makers and designers gave their ideas about the role of the robot.
The next step is yet to be determined, but the ultimate ideal is that residents can use such a kit to develop and operate their own services. The end of the project looks set to be a good-to-use kit with the clear description and guide to the process. We will introduce it to the neighbourhood with a small conference with working sessions hopefully in the summer.
